LES SACS DE TOURING — TOUT CE QUE TU DOIS SAVOIR

TOURING BAGS — EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

When you go splitboarding, your backpack quickly becomes as important as your board. It’s your organizational base and often the difference between a great outing and a frustrating day. It carries your safety gear, food, layers, water... in short, everything you need to enjoy your day without stress.

Here’s a clear guide to understanding how to choose a touring pack — what to look for, what to avoid — and some solid options available in our stores!

1. Volume — The Basics

Volume mainly depends on the duration of your outings and what you carry with you.

  • 20–25 L: Good for short trips, quick access, when you're packing light.

  • 30–35 L: The most versatile choice. Enough space for a proper day in the mountains with a shovel, probe, extra layer, lunch, water.

  • 40 L and +: For big days, more demanding trips, or with additional equipment.

If you’re hesitating between two sizes: go a little larger. An overpacked bag is never pleasant on the ascent.

2. Access & Opening — Top or Back-Panel

A good touring pack should be easy to access, especially when it's cold or time is critical.

Back-panel opening

  • Quick access to all contents

  • Your back stays dry in the snow

  • Ideal for reaching shovel/probe without emptying the pack

Top opening

  • Simple and effective

  • More flexible if you vary the load

  • Often lighter

Many backcountry packs combine both. This is definitely a big plus.

3. Safety Compartment

A splitboard pack must have:

  • A dedicated compartment for shovel and probe

  • Quick access, well-organized

  • Separate from the rest of your equipment

In the backcountry, every second counts. Your safety equipment should always be in the same place.

4. Avalanche Airbag

Packs with an avalanche airbag add a layer of safety for exposed backcountry.
It's not mandatory for everyone, but:

  • It can make a real difference in certain situations

  • It's heavier and more expensive

  • It requires maintenance and training

If you often ride in more challenging terrain or want to maximize safety, it's an investment to consider seriously.

5. Other Details to Look For

Here are other technical features that make all the difference in the backcountry:

  • Dedicated Safety Gear pockets (probe/shovel) — essential for quick storage.

  • Splitboard / A-Frame carry compatibility — for attaching your split on the ascent or descent without hassle.

  • Ice axe/pole straps — essential if you want to climb without packing everything into the bag.

  • Hydration system — keeps your water accessible without taking off your pack.

  • Hip belt/quick-access pockets — snacks and small items become easier to reach.

Tips for Choosing Your Pack

  1. Think about what you actually carry on each outing

  2. Try on your pack loaded, not empty

  3. Prioritize organization and comfort over looks

  4. In the backcountry, it's better to be a little over-prepared than under-prepared

In Summary

Choosing a splitboard pack isn't just about looks — it's a technical decision that impacts your comfort and safety. Whether you just want to hike for pow laps or plan a real backcountry day, there's a pack made for you.
